![]() On the treble clef, Middle C is shown with an orange ledger line below the main 5 staff lines. These note names are shown below on the treble clef followed by the bass clef. Middle C (midi note 60) is shown with an orange line under the 2nd note on the piano diagram. This major scale key is on the Circle of 5ths - C major on circle of 5ths, which means that it is a commonly used major scale key. The C major scale has no sharp or flat notes. It also shows the scale degree chart for all 8 notes. In Blue are the notes on the Lines (for example: EGBDF on the Treble Clef). This step shows the ascending C major scale on the piano, treble clef and bass clef. In Red are the notes on the Spaces (for example: FACEGB on the Bass Clef). Notice how there is only one Middle C, and it is the the middle of the staff. Here are all the notes that are on the Grand Staff (both Treble and Clef). It is the third white key in the set of three-black keys. Therefore, A is the next white note proceeding B.A is lower on the staff than B, so it will be lower on the piano (going to the left).A is the first letter in the alphabet, so it is the proceeding note on the piano before B.It is to the right of the set of three-black keys. Therefore, B is the proceeding white note before C.B is lower on the staff than C, so it will be lower on the piano (going to the right).B is the proceeding letter in the alphabet, so it is the proceeding note on the piano.Logically then, if C is in front of the keys, then where is B? There are six Cs in this picture – can you find them all? Notice, also, that Cs are ALWAYS in front of pairs of black keys, as is highlighted in this picture. Seen above, the number 3 is where Middle C is. Directly in front of the first black key in that set is Middle C, as highlighted in the picture below.Seen below is a descending C,B,A progression. Perhaps that was a little confusing let me clarify.Įach line and space have their own note names Middle C is on the ledger line, B is on the space, and A is on the top line – C,B,A. Hence, the note progression from C down is B then A, but reading the staff upwards the progression is A,B,C. So if you know Middle C, the next notes going down the staff are the first two letters before C Middle C, B, A.Ĭompare the similarities between A&B with D&E on the Treble Clef where D&E move upwards after C, B and A move downwards before Middle C.Īs seen above, the top note on the staff is B, and the note on the line below it is A. ![]() Remember: There is only one Middle C, but it shows up on both staffs. The main difference between the two is that Middle C is played by the right hand if on the Treble Clef, and by the left hand if on the Bass Clef. Seem familiar? Although Middle C appears to be a different note on the Bass Clef than on the Treble Clef, they are one of the same. The note hanging out there on that little line is the all important “ Middle C.” That’s a lot to take in at one time, so let’s break it down.
